Below is the essay that Jeff wrote in his application to be part of the trip to Guatemala:

    I am submitting my essay in hopes of being selected for the trip to Guatemala. There are several reasons that I feel I would be a good candidate to be selected for this trip. I have very strong leadership skills and enjoy working and helping people better themselves and the people around them. I also possess allot of skills that I think would be a perfect fit for the purpose of this trip. I am a very diverse person when it comes to home improvement and building things. IE Roofing, Electrical, Dry Wall, Framing, Concrete, Window’s, Doors, exc. and really enjoy building and working on things. Growing up my Dad was the do it yourselfer and I have picked up allot of knowledge and skills from him. Since I purchased my home 2 years ago I have done all the work to my home from the things I have learned along the way.

    Other reasons and maybe one of more important reasons for me is because of my fiancé. Over the past two years she has been going to School to become a teacher and we all know they don’t make a ton of Money J and honestly have a really hard job. Over the course of these two years she learned about this program called Ameri Corps which is a college sponsored program that helps students pay for school and they donate time in the community. This program has given her the opportunity to work with all sorts of kids in the community and prepare her for her future when she becomes a teacher.  It doesn’t pay a whole lot of money and Amanda is always busy volunteering her time for different charities and events, which leaves me at home doing the cooking, cleaning, and work around the house. To be honest we had some tough times between the two of us because of her always volunteering her time for everyone else and ultimately leaving me to take care of things around the house on my own. But just the other day I got to go to her graduation with her and talking with some of the other people and members made me realize a valid point. In a way everything she is doing I have contributed to as well. By me taking care of things around our house and running errands for her. I have helped her to be able to help other people. Being at her graduation yesterday and seeing all the things this group of people have done over the year and the joy it brought to them and the people they helped really has swayed my decision to submit this essay.

    I think this opportunity could be beneficial for me both professionally and personally bringing my fiancé and me closer together and able to share different experiences and stories. I also think that it would help me bring back this experience to the Midwest team and get more people involved and excited about these types of events.
