John Carter
Focus Services, Network Administrator

Below is the essay that John wrote in his application to be part of the trip to
Guatemala:
For the past two years I have entertained the thought of
going on the Focus, Guatemala Expedition but have not been able for one reason or
another. This year I am hoping that most of those obstacles are out of the
way and I can enjoy the opportunity to serve. I think that we can all agree
that we all have an extremely easy and very lucrative life in comparison to many
people around the world. It is very easy to get caught up in our own day-to-day
lives forgetting that there are millions of people throughout the world that could
desperately use our help even if that is in the form of giving a little of our precious
time.
I would like to be considered for this Guatemala Expedition
for several reasons. I would like to be able to share this experience with my family,
friends, and co-workers. I think that it is very important for others to see the
cultures and lifestyles that are beyond our somewhat sheltered lives; and what needs
are out there. I think that I have many abilities beyond pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete
or plugging in a network cable that would come in handy while on this service expedition.
Many of my past jobs have been around carpentry or construction of some sort.
I would love to experience the culture of a third-world country beside Tijuana,
Mexico, I have a current passport, and maybe I can get a worm or something to help
me shed those few extra pounds. But seriously I would love to go.
Some of my service experience:
While in Tennessee I had the opportunity to help out an
Amish family on several different occasions. We helped them plow fields, dig
holes for outhouses, and plant crops. We would also do some sort of volunteer
work once a week. I volunteer annually for the AYSO to teach kids the game of soccer.
As a part of the scouting program both as a scout myself and as an adult I have
numerous opportunities to serve those in need. This includes anything from
roofing a house, clearing brush, and many other needs. I recently helped a needy
friend pour cement for his driveway. Maybe I can pick up on my Spanish a little
and not let those college credits go to waste.
I seriously would appreciate you considering me for the
Guatemala expedition. I think this would be an awesome experience and would
enjoy the opportunity.
